We all support this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without giving it a second thought. Here's where I differ from the rest of you. Up until September, I had actually been just like you. I joined the ranks of the long-lasting sick, continued to get my paycheque, and sat and took it easy. The very first few weeks were great I. managed to get all the little jobs that accumulate done. In the 3rd week, a malaise began to sneak in. I had nothing to do, nowhere to go, and loads of time to kill. I began to get depressed.

We have a no cigarette smoking policy in our home, imposed on the majority (me & my father) by the minority (my mother). This means that whenever we wish to smoke, we have to stand at the back entrance. From here, you can see the entrance to our neighbour's house and the fronts of two homes across the street. After smoking cigarettes nearly continually when the anxiety set in, I began to notice the comings and goings of the people in the street. I began to detect when the mums strolled their kids to school when they returned when they went out shopping, when they took the pet for a walk, and when they sat in the garden. With absolutely nothing else to do, my mind filed away the routine times and I would discover myself unconsciously having a cigarette when these women went about their everyday routines.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with the majority of individuals who walk past your house. I began with a friendly hello and advanced to the point where I generally walk down to the garden gate and have a chat. Many people would disrupt me now, and say that many women in the house do what I do, talk and stop with the other women. I have two replies. One, I'm male, and two, you do not understand the half of everything. I think it's time I offered you a complete photo of our street and the people who survive on it. Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a vacant house, and after that next to that is. where Jody lives. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is constantly very first with any chatter. Next up is Graham's home, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's house, she's a huge Irish lady in her 60's. Last on this website is the detached house where Steve and Mandy live with their 2 teenage kids. They are in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the road, we begin with Linda's home. Next is our home. Last on the row was a chap who worked somewhere in the City.
