The very first couple of weeks were great I. managed to get all the little jobs that accumulate done. Then in the 3rd week, a malaise started to creep in. I had absolutely nothing to do, no place to go, and loads of time to kill. I began to get depressed.

We have a no smoking cigarettes policy in our home, imposed on the majority (me & my daddy) by the minority (my mother). This suggests that whenever we wish to smoke, we have to stand at the back door. From here, you can see the entrance to our neighbour's house and the fronts of 2 homes across the street. After smoking nearly continually when the anxiety embeded in, I started to discover the comings and goings of the people in the street. I began to detect when the mums walked their kids to school when they came back when they went out shopping, when they took the pet dog for a walk, and when they sat in the garden. With absolutely nothing else to do, my mind filed away the routine times and I would find myself unconsciously having a cigarette when these ladies set about their day-to-day routines.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with most of the people who stroll past the house. I started with a friendly hi and advanced to the point where I generally stroll down to the garden gate and have a chat. The majority of people would disrupt me now, and say that most ladies in the house do what I do, stop and talk with the other women. I have 2 replies. One, I'm male, and two, you don't know the half of everything. I believe it's time I provided you a total image of our street and the people who survive on it. It will be available in beneficial later on. It's a really little street, 8 semi-detached houses and 1 detached (that's 5 structures in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a uninhabited house, and then beside that is. where Jody lives. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is always very first with any gossip. Next up is Graham's home, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's house, she's a big Irish lady in her 60's. Last on this site is the separated home where Steve and Mandy live with their two teenage boys. They are in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the road, we start with Linda's home. She just recently separated from her partner and remains in the process of moving. She remains in her mid 30's and has two pre-teen children Emma and Becky. Next is our home. I haven't presented myself yet, so now would be a good time. I'm John (28 ), and I live with my mum Chrissie (45) and papa Bob (52 ). Next along are some beginners. At this time in November, I didn't know their names, so-called them Dick and Helen to myself.
