We all support this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without offering it a reservation. Here's where I vary from the rest of you. Up until September, I had actually been similar to you. Setting off to work every day, worried more about what I was going to make with the day instead of what my neighbours would be up to. Then, I established a problem with my knee. A semi-serious problem. It didn't stop me from doing most things, I could walk, run, and climb, however it did stop me from driving, which in turn stopped me from working. I signed up with the ranks of the long-lasting sick, continued to receive my paycheque, and sat and took it simple. The very first few weeks were great I. managed to get all the little jobs that pile up done. Then in the 3rd week, a malaise began to sneak in. I had absolutely nothing to do, no place to go, and loads of time to kill. I started to get depressed.

We have a no smoking cigarettes policy in our home, imposed on the bulk (me & my father) by the minority (my mom). This implies that whenever we wish to smoke, we need to stand at the back door. From here, you can see the entrance to our neighbour's home and the fronts of 2 houses across the street. After smoking cigarettes practically continuously when the depression set in, I started to see the comings and goings of the people in the street. I began to detect when the mums walked their kids to school when they returned when they headed out shopping, when they took the dog for a walk, and when they sat in the garden. With nothing else to do, my mind filed away the routine times and I would find myself subconsciously having a cigarette when these women set about their daily regimens.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with many of the people who walk past the house. I started with a friendly hey there and progressed to the point where I normally stroll down to the garden gate and have a chat. Most people would disrupt me now, and say that many ladies at house do what I do, talk and stop with the other females. It's a very little street, 8 semi-detached homes and 1 removed (that's 5 structures in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a uninhabited home, and after that next to that is. where Jody lives. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is constantly first with any gossip. Next up is Graham's home, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's home, she's a huge Irish woman in her 60's. Then last on this site is the detached home where Steve and Mandy live with their 2 teenage sons. They remain in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the road, we start with Linda's home. She recently separated from her husband and remains in the process of moving. She remains in her mid 30's and has 2 pre-teen children Emma and Becky. Next is our house. I haven't presented myself yet, so now would be a good time. I'm John (28 ), and I live with my mum Chrissie (45) and father Bob (52 ). Next along are some newbies. At this time in November, I didn't understand their names, so-called them Dick and Helen to myself. Of course, whenever I talked to them, I used terms like a neighbour to bridge this space in my knowledge. They were a couple, in their late 30's, early 40's, and they appeared to keep themselves to themselves. Last on the row was a bloke who worked someplace in the City. I never talked to him, although what I'm about to tell you, so this is the last time I discuss him.
