With nothing else to do, my mind filed away the routine times and I would discover myself unconsciously having a cigarette when these women set about their day-to-day routines.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with many of the people who stroll past the house. I started with a friendly hey there and progressed to the point where I generally stroll down to the garden gate and have a chat. A lot of people would interrupt me now, and say that a lot of females at home do what I do, chat and stop with the other women. It's a really little street, 8 semi-detached houses and 1 separated (that's 5 buildings in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a vacant house, and then beside that is. where Jody lives. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is always first with any gossip. Next up is Graham's house, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's home, she's a huge Irish woman in her 60's. Last on this site is the detached home where Steve and Mandy live with their 2 teenage kids. They remain in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the roadway, we begin with Linda's house. Next is our home. Last on the row was a bloke who worked somewhere in the City.
