We all go along with this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without providing it a 2nd thought. Setting off to work every day, worried more about what I was going to do with the day rather than what my neighbours would be up to. After cigarette smoking almost continuously when the depression embeded in, I started to see the comings and goings of individuals in the street. I started to detect when the mums strolled their kids to school when they returned when they headed out shopping, when they took the canine for a walk, and when they sat in the garden. With nothing else to do, my mind filed away the routine times and I would find myself unconsciously having a cigarette when these women tackled their everyday regimens.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with most of the people who walk past your home. I began with a friendly hey there and progressed to the point where I generally walk down to the garden gate and have a chat. Many people would interrupt me now, and say that many ladies at home do what I do, chat and stop with the other women. I have 2 replies. One, I'm male, and 2, you don't know the half of it all. It's a really small street, 8 semi-detached houses and 1 removed (that's 5 buildings in all). She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is always very first with any gossip. Next up is Graham's home, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's house, she's a huge Irish lady in her 60's. Then last on this website is the detached home where Steve and Mandy deal with their two teenage boys. They remain in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the road, we begin with Linda's house. Next is our house. Last on the row was a bloke who worked someplace in the City.
