All of us accompany this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without offering it a second thought. Here's where I differ from the rest of you. We have a no smoking cigarettes policy in our home, enforced on the majority (me & my father) by the minority (my mom). This indicates that whenever we want to smoke, we have to stand at the back door. From here, you can see the entryway to our neighbour's home and the fronts of two houses across the street. After smoking almost constantly when the depression embeded in, I started to observe the comings and goings of individuals in the street. I began to detect when the mums strolled their kids to school when they came back when they went out shopping, when they took the dog for a walk, and when they sat in the garden. With nothing else to do, my mind filed away the regular times and I would find myself subconsciously having a cigarette when these females tackled their everyday regimens.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with many of the people who stroll past the house. I started with a friendly hi and progressed to the point where I typically stroll down to the garden gate and have a chat. Most individuals would disrupt me now, and state that a lot of women at home do what I do, talk and stop with the other women. It's a really little street, 8 semi-detached homes and 1 detached (that's 5 structures in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a uninhabited house, and then next to that is. where Jody lives. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is always very first with any chatter. Next up is Graham's home, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's house, she's a big Irish woman in her 60's. Then last on this site is the detached house where Steve and Mandy cope with their two teenage kids. They are in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the roadway, we begin with Linda's home. Next is our house. Last on the row was a chap who worked somewhere in the City.
