After smoking cigarettes practically continually when the depression set in, I began to observe the comings and goings of the people in the street. I started to detect when the mums walked their kids to school when they came back when they went out shopping, when they took the pet dog for a walk, and when they sat in the garden. With absolutely nothing else to do, my mind filed away the regular times and I would find myself unconsciously having a cigarette when these ladies tackled their daily routines.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with most of the people who stroll past the house. I started with a friendly hi and advanced to the point where I generally stroll down to the garden gate and have a chat.
