We all go along with this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without providing it a second thought. Here's where I vary from the rest of you. Up until September, I had been just like you. From here, you can see the entrance to our neighbour's home and the fronts of two homes across the street. After smoking cigarettes almost continually when the depression set in, I began to observe the comings and goings of individuals in the street. I began to detect when the mums walked their kids to school when they came back when they went out shopping, when they took the dog for a walk, and when they beinged in the garden. With nothing else to do, my mind filed away the routine times and I would find myself subconsciously having a cigarette when these ladies set about their day-to-day routines.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with most of the people who stroll past the home. I started with a friendly hi and advanced to the point where I usually walk down to the garden gate and have a chat. Most individuals would interrupt me now, and say that many ladies at house do what I do, stop and chat with the other women. It's a very small street, 8 semi-detached houses and 1 detached (that's 5 buildings in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a uninhabited home, and after that next to that is. where Jody lives. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is always very first with any chatter. Next up is Graham's home, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's house, she's a huge Irish lady in her 60's. Last on this site is the separated house where Steve and Mandy live with their two teenage sons. They are in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the roadway, we start with Linda's house. Next is our house. Last on the row was a chap who worked somewhere in the City.
