This indicates that whenever we want to smoke, we need to stand at the back entrance. From here, you can see the entrance to our neighbour's house and the fronts of 2 houses across the street. After smoking practically constantly when the depression set in, I began to discover the comings and goings of the people in the street. I started to pick up on when the mums strolled their kids to school when they came back when they headed out shopping, when they took the dog for a walk, and when they beinged in the garden. With absolutely nothing else to do, my mind filed away the routine times and I would find myself unconsciously having a cigarette when these ladies tackled their day-to-day regimens.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with the majority of the people who walk past your home. I started with a friendly hi and progressed to the point where I normally stroll down to the garden gate and have a chat. Many people would interrupt me now, and state that the majority of ladies in your home do what I do, chat and stop with the other women. I have two replies. One, I'm male, and 2, you do not know the half of it all. I think it's time I provided you a complete image of our street and individuals who survive on it. It will be available in useful later on. It's a really small street, 8 semi-detached houses and 1 detached (that's 5 buildings in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a vacant house, and after that beside that is. where Jody lives. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is always very first with any chatter. Next up is Graham's home, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's home, she's a big Irish lady in her 60's. Last on this site is the removed house where Steve and Mandy live with their two teenage children. They remain in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the roadway, we begin with Linda's house. Next is our house. Last on the row was a chap who worked someplace in the City.
