All of us support this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without offering it a second thought. Here's where I differ from the rest of you. Up until September, I had been similar to you. The first couple of weeks were fine I. managed to get all the little jobs that accumulate done. In the third week, a malaise started to creep in. I had absolutely nothing to do, nowhere to go, and loads of time to eliminate. I began to get depressed.

We have a no cigarette smoking policy in our home, imposed on the bulk (me & my dad) by the minority (my mother). This indicates that whenever we want to smoke, we need to stand at the back entrance. From here, you can see the entrance to our neighbour's house and the fronts of 2 homes across the street. After smoking practically continuously when the depression set in, I started to discover the comings and goings of the people in the street. I began to detect when the mums strolled their kids to school when they came back when they headed out shopping, when they took the dog for a walk, and when they sat in the garden. With absolutely nothing else to do, my mind filed away the regular times and I would find myself unconsciously having a cigarette when these females tackled their everyday routines.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with most of the people who stroll past the house. I began with a friendly hello and advanced to the point where I normally walk down to the garden gate and have a chat. A lot of people would interrupt me now, and say that a lot of females at home do what I do, chat and stop with the other ladies. It's a really little street, 8 semi-detached homes and 1 removed (that's 5 buildings in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a vacant house, and then beside that is. where Jody lives. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is always very first with any chatter. Next up is Graham's home, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's home, she's a big Irish lady in her 60's. Then last on this site is the detached home where Steve and Mandy cope with their 2 teenage kids. They remain in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the road, we start with Linda's house. She recently separated from her hubby and is in the procedure of moving. She is in her mid 30's and has 2 pre-teen daughters Emma and Becky. Next is our house. I have not presented myself yet, so now would be a great time. I'm John (28 ), and I deal with my mum Chrissie (45) and papa Bob (52 ). Next along are some newbies. At this time in November, I didn't understand their names, so-called them Dick and Helen to myself. Obviously, whenever I spoke to them, I used terms like a neighbour to bridge this gap in my understanding. They were a couple, in their late 30's, early 40's, and they appeared to keep themselves to themselves. Last on the row was a bloke who worked someplace in the City. I never ever talked to him, despite the fact that what I'm about to inform you, so this is the last time I mention him.
