We all go along with this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without providing it a second thought. Setting off to work every day, concerned more about what I was going to do with the day rather than what my neighbours would be up to. November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with most of the people who walk past the house. I started with a friendly hey there and progressed to the point where I normally stroll down to the garden gate and have a chat. Many people would disrupt me now, and state that most women at house do what I do, stop and chat with the other ladies. It's a very small street, 8 semi-detached houses and 1 separated (that's 5 buildings in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a uninhabited house, and after that next to that is. Next up is Graham's house, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's home, she's a huge Irish lady in her 60's. Last on this site is the separated home where Steve and Mandy live with their 2 teenage kids.

On the right-hand side of the road, we begin with Linda's house. She recently separated from her other half and remains in the process of moving. She remains in her mid 30's and has 2 pre-teen daughters Emma and Becky. Next is our house. I haven't presented myself yet, so now would be a good time. I'm John (28 ), and I live with my mum Chrissie (45) and dad Bob (52 ). Next along are some newbies. At this time in November, I didn't understand their names, so-called them Dick and Helen to myself. Of course, whenever I spoke to them, I used terms like a neighbour to bridge this space in my knowledge. They were a couple, in their late 30's, early 40's, and they seemed to keep themselves to themselves. Last on the row was a chap who worked somewhere in the City. I never ever spoke with him, despite the fact that what I'm about to tell you, so this is the last time I mention him.
