We all accompany this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without providing it a doubt. Here's where I differ from the rest of you. Up till September, I had actually been much like you. We have a no cigarette smoking policy in our home, imposed on the bulk (me & my dad) by the minority (my mom). This means that whenever we want to smoke, we have to stand at the back door. From here, you can see the entryway to our neighbour's home and the fronts of two houses across the street. After cigarette smoking nearly continually when the depression set in, I started to discover the comings and goings of the people in the street. I began to detect when the mums walked their kids to school when they returned when they headed out shopping, when they took the pet dog for a walk, and when they beinged in the garden. With absolutely nothing else to do, my mind filed away the regular times and I would discover myself unconsciously having a cigarette when these ladies tackled their daily regimens.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with most of the individuals who walk past the house. I began with a friendly hello and progressed to the point where I usually walk down to the garden gate and have a chat. Many people would interrupt me now, and say that many ladies at house do what I do, chat and stop with the other women. It's a very little street, 8 semi-detached homes and 1 detached (that's 5 buildings in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a vacant house, and then beside that is. where Jody lives. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is constantly first with any chatter. Next up is Graham's home, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's home, she's a huge Irish woman in her 60's. Then last on this website is the separated house where Steve and Mandy live with their two teenage boys. They remain in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the roadway, we start with Linda's home. Next is our house. Last on the row was a chap who worked someplace in the City.
