After smoking cigarettes practically continually when the depression set in, I began to see the comings and goings of the people in the street. I began to detect when the mums walked their kids to school when they came back when they went out shopping, when they took the dog for a walk, and when they beinged in the garden. With nothing else to do, my mind filed away the routine times and I would find myself unconsciously having a cigarette when these ladies tackled their day-to-day routines.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with many of the individuals who walk past the home. I began with a friendly hey there and advanced to the point where I usually walk down to the garden gate and have a chat. Most individuals would interrupt me now, and state that the majority of women at home do what I do, stop and talk with the other ladies. It's a really small street, 8 semi-detached homes and 1 removed (that's 5 structures in all). Next is Sheila's home, she's a huge Irish lady in her 60's. Last on this site is the separated home where Steve and Mandy live with their 2 teenage children.

On the right-hand side of the roadway, we start with Linda's home. Next is our house. Last on the row was a bloke who worked someplace in the City.
