We all go along with this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without giving it a second idea. Setting off to work every day, concerned more about what I was going to do with the day rather than what my neighbours would be up to. I began to pick up on when the mums walked their kids to school when they came back when they went out shopping, when they took the dog for a walk, and when they sat in the garden. With absolutely nothing else to do, my mind filed away the regular times and I would discover myself unconsciously having a cigarette when these women went about their daily regimens.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with the majority of individuals who walk past your house. I began with a friendly hello and advanced to the point where I usually walk down to the garden gate and have a chat. Most people would disrupt me now, and state that a lot of women in your home do what I do, stop and chat with the other women. I have 2 replies. One, I'm male, and two, you do not know the half of it all. I think it's time I offered you a total image of our street and individuals who reside on it. It will come in useful in the future. It's a very little street, 8 semi-detached houses and 1 removed (that's 5 buildings in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a uninhabited house, and then next to that is. where Jody lives. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is always first with any chatter. Next up is Graham's house, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's home, she's a huge Irish woman in her 60's. Then last on this site is the removed house where Steve and Mandy deal with their 2 teenage boys. They remain in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the road, we start with Linda's home. She just recently separated from her husband and remains in the procedure of moving. She remains in her mid 30's and has 2 pre-teen daughters Emma and Becky. Next is our house. I have not introduced myself yet, so now would be a good time. I'm John (28 ), and I live with my mum Chrissie (45) and daddy Bob (52 ). Next along are some beginners. At this time in November, I didn't know their names, so-called them Dick and Helen to myself. Obviously, whenever I talked to them, I used terms like a neighbour to bridge this space in my knowledge. They were a couple, in their late 30's, early 40's, and they appeared to keep themselves to themselves. Last on the row was a chap who worked someplace in the City. I never talked to him, even though what I'm about to inform you, so this is the last time I discuss him.
