We all support this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without providing it a doubt. Here's where I differ from the rest of you. Up until September, I had been similar to you. I joined the ranks of the long-lasting ill, continued to receive my paycheque, and sat and took it easy. The first few weeks were fine I. managed to get all the little jobs that pile up done. Then in the 3rd week, a malaise began to sneak in. I had absolutely nothing to do, no place to go, and loads of time to eliminate. I started to get depressed.

We have a no smoking policy in our house, enforced on the majority (me & my father) by the minority (my mother). This suggests that whenever we want to smoke, we have to stand at the back door. From here, you can see the entryway to our neighbour's home and the fronts of two homes across the street. After smoking almost continually when the anxiety set in, I began to observe the comings and goings of the people in the street. I started to detect when the mums walked their kids to school when they came back when they went out shopping, when they took the pet dog for a walk, and when they sat in the garden. With nothing else to do, my mind filed away the regular times and I would discover myself unconsciously having a cigarette when these ladies set about their daily routines.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with the majority of individuals who walk past your house. I started with a friendly hey there and advanced to the point where I usually stroll down to the garden gate and have a chat. Many people would interrupt me now, and state that most women at home do what I do, stop and chat with the other women. I have two replies. One, I'm male, and two, you do not know the half of it all. I believe it's time I gave you a complete image of our street and the people who live on it. It will come in helpful in the future. It's a very little street, 8 semi-detached houses and 1 removed (that's 5 buildings in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a vacant home, and after that next to that is. where Jody lives. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is constantly very first with any gossip. Next up is Graham's home, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's house, she's a big Irish woman in her 60's. Then last on this site is the detached home where Steve and Mandy live with their two teenage sons. They are in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the roadway, we begin with Linda's home. Next is our home. Last on the row was a chap who worked someplace in the City.
