After smoking nearly continuously when the anxiety set in, I started to observe the comings and goings of the people in the street. I started to pick up on when the mums strolled their kids to school when they returned when they went out shopping, when they took the dog for a walk, and when they sat in the garden. With nothing else to do, my mind filed away the routine times and I would find myself subconsciously having a cigarette when these women tackled their day-to-day routines.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with most of the individuals who walk past the house. I began with a friendly hello and advanced to the point where I generally stroll down to the garden gate and have a chat. The majority of people would interrupt me now, and state that most ladies at home do what I do, stop and talk with the other ladies. It's a very small street, 8 semi-detached homes and 1 separated (that's 5 buildings in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a uninhabited house, and then next to that is. where Jody lives. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is constantly very first with any gossip. Next up is Graham's home, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's house, she's a huge Irish female in her 60's. Last on this site is the removed house where Steve and Mandy live with their two teenage sons. They remain in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the roadway, we begin with Linda's home. Next is our house. Last on the row was a chap who worked somewhere in the City.
