We have a no cigarette smoking policy in our home, implemented on the bulk (me & my dad) by the minority (my mom). This suggests that whenever we wish to smoke, we have to stand at the back door. From here, you can see the entrance to our neighbour's house and the fronts of 2 houses across the street. After smoking almost constantly when the depression set in, I began to see the comings and goings of the people in the street. I began to pick up on when the mums walked their kids to school when they came back when they went out shopping, when they took the dog for a walk, and when they sat in the garden. With absolutely nothing else to do, my mind filed away the regular times and I would find myself unconsciously having a cigarette when these women tackled their everyday regimens.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with most of the people who walk past your house. I started with a friendly hey there and progressed to the point where I normally walk down to the garden gate and have a chat. The majority of people would disrupt me now, and state that a lot of women at home do what I do, talk and stop with the other women. I have 2 replies. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is always very first with any chatter. Next up is Graham's house, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's home, she's a huge Irish female in her 60's. Then last on this site is the separated home where Steve and Mandy live with their two teenage children. They are in their late 30's.
