We have a no smoking cigarettes policy in our home, enforced on the majority (me & my father) by the minority (my mother). This suggests that whenever we want to smoke, we have to stand at the back door. From here, you can see the entrance to our neighbour's home and the fronts of 2 homes across the street. After smoking practically continually when the depression embeded in, I started to see the comings and goings of individuals in the street. I began to detect when the mums strolled their kids to school when they came back when they headed out shopping, when they took the pet dog for a walk, and when they beinged in the garden. With absolutely nothing else to do, my mind filed away the routine times and I would find myself unconsciously having a cigarette when these women went about their day-to-day regimens.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with many of the people who stroll past the house. I started with a friendly hey there and progressed to the point where I usually stroll down to the garden gate and have a chat. Many people would interrupt me now, and say that most women at home do what I do, stop and talk with the other women. It's a very little street, 8 semi-detached houses and 1 separated (that's 5 structures in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a uninhabited house, and after that next to that is. Next up is Graham's house, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's house, she's a huge Irish woman in her 60's. Last on this website is the separated home where Steve and Mandy live with their two teenage sons.

On the right-hand side of the road, we begin with Linda's house. Next is our home. Last on the row was a chap who worked someplace in the City.
