We all support this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without giving it a second thought. Here's where I differ from the rest of you. Up till September, I had been similar to you. Setting off to work every day, worried more about what I was going to do with the day rather than what my neighbours would depend on. Then, I developed a problem with my knee. A semi-serious problem. It didn't stop me from doing most things, I might stroll, run, and climb, but it did stop me from driving, which in turn stopped me from working. I joined the ranks of the long-term ill, continued to get my paycheque, and sat and took it easy. The very first few weeks were fine I. managed to get all the little tasks that accumulate done. In the third week, a despair started to creep in. I had nothing to do, nowhere to go, and loads of time to eliminate. I began to get depressed.

We have a no smoking policy in our home, imposed on the majority (me & my daddy) by the minority (my mom). From here, you can see the entrance to our neighbour's home and the fronts of two houses across the street. I started to choose up on when the mums walked their kids to school when they came back when they went out shopping, when they took the dog for a walk, and when they sat in the garden.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with the majority of the people who stroll past the house. I began with a friendly hi and progressed to the point where I usually stroll down to the garden gate and have a chat. Most people would disrupt me now, and say that the majority of ladies at home do what I do, stop and talk with the other women. I have 2 replies. One, I'm male, and two, you do not know the half of everything. I think it's time I gave you a total image of our street and the people who live on it. It will come in useful later on. It's a very little street, 8 semi-detached homes and 1 detached (that's 5 structures in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a uninhabited home, and then beside that is. where Jody lives. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is always first with any chatter. Next up is Graham's house, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's house, she's a big Irish lady in her 60's. Then last on this site is the detached home where Steve and Mandy deal with their two teenage boys. They remain in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the roadway, we begin with Linda's home. Next is our house. Last on the row was a chap who worked someplace in the City.
