All of us go along with this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without offering it a second thought. Here's where I differ from the rest of you. Up till September, I had been much like you. I joined the ranks of the long-lasting ill, continued to receive my paycheque, and sat and took it easy. The first couple of weeks were great I. managed to get all the little jobs that pile up done. Then in the third week, a malaise began to creep in. I had nothing to do, no place to go, and loads of time to kill. I started to get depressed.

We have a no smoking cigarettes policy in our home, enforced on the bulk (me & my dad) by the minority (my mother). This implies that whenever we want to smoke, we have to stand at the back door. From here, you can see the entrance to our neighbour's home and the fronts of two houses across the street. After smoking cigarettes nearly constantly when the depression embeded in, I started to observe the comings and goings of the people in the street. I started to detect when the mums strolled their kids to school when they came back when they went out shopping, when they took the canine for a walk, and when they beinged in the garden. With nothing else to do, my mind filed away the routine times and I would discover myself subconsciously having a cigarette when these females tackled their daily routines.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with the majority of the people who stroll past your house. I began with a friendly hello and advanced to the point where I usually stroll down to the garden gate and have a chat. Many people would disrupt me now, and say that many ladies in the house do what I do, stop and talk with the other women. I have two replies. One, I'm male, and 2, you do not understand the half of it all. I believe it's time I gave you a complete photo of our street and the people who survive on it. It will come in useful later. It's a really little street, 8 semi-detached houses and 1 removed (that's 5 buildings in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a vacant house, and after that next to that is. where Jody lives. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is constantly first with any gossip. Next up is Graham's house, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's home, she's a big Irish lady in her 60's. Then last on this site is the detached house where Steve and Mandy deal with their 2 teenage boys. They are in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the roadway, we begin with Linda's house. She recently separated from her partner and remains in the procedure of moving. She remains in her mid 30's and has two pre-teen daughters Emma and Becky. Next is our home. I have not introduced myself yet, so now would be a great time. I'm John (28 ), and I live with my mum Chrissie (45) and papa Bob (52 ). Next along are some newbies. At this time in November, I didn't understand their names, so-called them Dick and Helen to myself. Obviously, whenever I spoke to them, I utilized terms like a neighbour to bridge this gap in my knowledge. They were a couple, in their late 30's, early 40's, and they appeared to keep themselves to themselves. Last on the row was a chap who worked someplace in the City. I never spoke to him, despite the fact that what I'm about to inform you, so this is the last time I discuss him.
