We all go along with this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without providing it a second idea. Setting off to work every day, concerned more about what I was going to do with the day rather than what my neighbours would be up to. After smoking cigarettes nearly continuously when the depression set in, I began to discover the comings and goings of the people in the street. I started to pick up on when the mums walked their kids to school when they came back when they went out shopping, when they took the dog for a walk, and when they sat in the garden. With nothing else to do, my mind filed away the regular times and I would find myself unconsciously having a cigarette when these women went about their everyday regimens.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with the majority of individuals who walk past your house. I began with a friendly hey there and progressed to the point where I normally walk down to the garden gate and have a chat. Many people would disrupt me now, and state that most ladies in your home do what I do, stop and chat with the other women. I have 2 replies. One, I'm male, and two, you do not understand the half of all of it. I think it's time I gave you a total image of our street and individuals who survive on it. It will come in beneficial later. It's a really small street, 8 semi-detached homes and 1 detached (that's 5 structures in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a vacant home, and then next to that is. where Jody lives. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is constantly first with any chatter. Next up is Graham's home, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's house, she's a big Irish lady in her 60's. Then last on this website is the separated home where Steve and Mandy live with their 2 teenage boys. They remain in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the roadway, we begin with Linda's home. Next is our house. Last on the row was a chap who worked somewhere in the City.
