We all go along with this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without providing it a 2nd thought. Setting off to work every day, concerned more about what I was going to do with the day rather than what my neighbours would be up to. It didn't stop me from doing most things, I might walk, run, and climb, but it did stop me from driving, and that in turn stopped me from working.

We have a no smoking policy in our home, enforced on the bulk (me & my dad) by the minority (my mother). This means that whenever we wish to smoke, we need to stand at the back door. From here, you can see the entrance to our neighbour's home and the fronts of two houses across the street. After cigarette smoking almost continuously when the depression embeded in, I started to notice the comings and goings of individuals in the street. I started to detect when the mums strolled their kids to school when they returned when they headed out shopping, when they took the dog for a walk, and when they sat in the garden. With nothing else to do, my mind filed away the regular times and I would find myself unconsciously having a cigarette when these ladies tackled their day-to-day routines.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with many of the people who walk past the home. I began with a friendly hi and advanced to the point where I usually walk down to the garden gate and have a chat. A lot of people would disrupt me now, and say that many females at home do what I do, stop and chat with the other women. It's a very small street, 8 semi-detached homes and 1 detached (that's 5 buildings in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a vacant home, and then next to that is. Next up is Graham's house, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's home, she's a big Irish woman in her 60's. Last on this site is the detached house where Steve and Mandy live with their 2 teenage boys.

On the right-hand side of the roadway, we begin with Linda's house. Next is our home. Last on the row was a chap who worked someplace in the City.
