All of us support this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without offering it a second thought. Here's where I differ from the rest of you. The first couple of weeks were fine I. managed to get all the little jobs that accumulate done. In the third week, a malaise began to sneak in. I had nothing to do, nowhere to go, and loads of time to eliminate. I started to get depressed.

We have a no smoking policy in our house, imposed on the bulk (me & my daddy) by the minority (my mother). This means that whenever we want to smoke, we need to stand at the back entrance. From here, you can see the entryway to our neighbour's house and the fronts of two houses across the street. After smoking nearly constantly when the depression embeded in, I started to see the comings and goings of individuals in the street. I began to detect when the mums walked their kids to school when they returned when they went out shopping, when they took the dog for a walk, and when they beinged in the garden. With nothing else to do, my mind filed away the regular times and I would find myself subconsciously having a cigarette when these ladies tackled their everyday regimens.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with most of individuals who stroll past the house. I started with a friendly hello and progressed to the point where I usually walk down to the garden gate and have a chat. Many people would disrupt me now, and say that many women at home do what I do, stop and chat with the other women. I have 2 replies. One, I'm male, and two, you do not know the half of it all. I think it's time I offered you a complete picture of our street and the people who live on it. It will can be found in useful later. It's a really small street, 8 semi-detached houses and 1 detached (that's 5 buildings in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a uninhabited house, and then beside that is. where Jody lives. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is always very first with any gossip. Next up is Graham's home, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's house, she's a big Irish female in her 60's. Last on this site is the separated home where Steve and Mandy live with their two teenage boys. They remain in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the roadway, we begin with Linda's home. Next is our home. Last on the row was a chap who worked someplace in the City.
