We have a no cigarette smoking policy in our home, enforced on the majority (me & my father) by the minority (my mother). This means that whenever we wish to smoke, we have to stand at the back door. From here, you can see the entrance to our neighbour's house and the fronts of two houses across the street. After smoking cigarettes practically continually when the anxiety set in, I started to see the comings and goings of the people in the street. I started to pick up on when the mums strolled their kids to school when they came back when they headed out shopping, when they took the pet dog for a walk, and when they sat in the garden. With nothing else to do, my mind filed away the routine times and I would find myself subconsciously having a cigarette when these ladies set about their daily regimens.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with the majority of the people who walk past the house. I began with a friendly hello and advanced to the point where I generally stroll down to the garden gate and have a chat. The majority of people would disrupt me now, and say that many women in your home do what I do, talk and stop with the other women. I have 2 replies. It's a very small street, 8 semi-detached homes and 1 detached (that's 5 buildings in all). Next is Sheila's house, she's a huge Irish female in her 60's. Last on this site is the separated house where Steve and Mandy live with their two teenage children.

On the right-hand side of the road, we begin with Linda's home. She just recently separated from her hubby and is in the procedure of moving. She remains in her mid 30's and has two pre-teen daughters Emma and Becky. Next is our house. I have not introduced myself yet, so now would be a great time. I'm John (28 ), and I deal with my mum Chrissie (45) and father Bob (52 ). Next along are some beginners. At this time in November, I didn't understand their names, so-called them Dick and Helen to myself. Of course, whenever I talked to them, I used terms like a neighbour to bridge this space in my understanding. They were a couple, in their late 30's, early 40's, and they seemed to keep themselves to themselves. Last on the row was a bloke who worked someplace in the City. I never ever spoke with him, although what I'm about to inform you, so this is the last time I mention him.
