All of us go along with this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without offering it a second thought. Here's where I vary from the rest of you. Up until September, I had been similar to you. I joined the ranks of the long-term sick, continued to get my paycheque, and sat and took it easy. The first couple of weeks were great I. managed to get all the little tasks that pile up done. In the third week, a malaise started to creep in. I had nothing to do, nowhere to go, and loads of time to eliminate. I began to get depressed.

We have a no cigarette smoking policy in our house, enforced on the majority (me & my dad) by the minority (my mother). From here, you can see the entryway to our neighbour's house and the fronts of two houses across the street. I began to choose up on when the mums walked their kids to school when they came back when they went out shopping, when they took the pet dog for a walk, and when they sat in the garden.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with the majority of the people who stroll past the house. I began with a friendly hi and advanced to the point where I typically walk down to the garden gate and have a chat. Many people would interrupt me now, and say that a lot of ladies in your home do what I do, stop and chat with the other women. I have two replies. One, I'm male, and two, you don't understand the half of everything. I think it's time I gave you a total image of our street and individuals who survive on it. It will come in useful later. It's a really small street, 8 semi-detached houses and 1 separated (that's 5 buildings in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a vacant house, and then next to that is. Next up is Graham's home, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's house, she's a big Irish lady in her 60's. Last on this site is the detached house where Steve and Mandy live with their two teenage children.

On the right-hand side of the road, we begin with Linda's house. Next is our home. Last on the row was a bloke who worked someplace in the City.
