Then in the 3rd week, a malaise began to sneak in. I had nothing to do, nowhere to go, and loads of time to kill. I started to get depressed.

We have a no cigarette smoking policy in our house, enforced on the majority (me & my daddy) by the minority (my mom). This indicates that whenever we wish to smoke, we have to stand at the back door. From here, you can see the entryway to our neighbour's house and the fronts of 2 homes across the street. After smoking cigarettes nearly continually when the anxiety set in, I started to observe the comings and goings of individuals in the street. I began to pick up on when the mums walked their kids to school when they came back when they headed out shopping, when they took the pet dog for a walk, and when they beinged in the garden. With absolutely nothing else to do, my mind filed away the regular times and I would discover myself subconsciously having a cigarette when these females tackled their day-to-day routines.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with many of the individuals who walk past the house. I began with a friendly hey there and advanced to the point where I normally stroll down to the garden gate and have a chat. Most people would interrupt me now, and state that many ladies at home do what I do, talk and stop with the other ladies. It's a extremely small street, 8 semi-detached homes and 1 separated (that's 5 structures in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a vacant home, and then next to that is. where Jody lives. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is constantly first with any chatter. Next up is Graham's home, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's home, she's a big Irish woman in her 60's. Then last on this site is the separated home where Steve and Mandy live with their 2 teenage kids. They remain in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the road, we start with Linda's house. She recently separated from her other half and is in the process of moving. She remains in her mid 30's and has two pre-teen daughters Emma and Becky. Next is our house. I haven't introduced myself yet, so now would be a great time. I'm John (28 ), and I deal with my mum Chrissie (45) and dad Bob (52 ). Next along are some newcomers. At this time in November, I didn't know their names, so-called them Dick and Helen to myself.
