After smoking cigarettes nearly continually when the depression set in, I began to observe the comings and goings of the people in the street. I began to pick up on when the mums strolled their kids to school when they returned when they went out shopping, when they took the canine for a walk, and when they sat in the garden. With absolutely nothing else to do, my mind filed away the regular times and I would discover myself unconsciously having a cigarette when these ladies tackled their everyday routines.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with many of the individuals who walk past the house. I began with a friendly hi and progressed to the point where I typically stroll down to the garden gate and have a chat. On the right-hand side of the road, we start with Linda's house. Next is our home. Last on the row was a chap who worked somewhere in the City.
