After smoking nearly continually when the depression set in, I began to observe the comings and goings of the people in the street. I started to detect when the mums walked their kids to school when they returned when they went out shopping, when they took the dog for a walk, and when they sat in the garden. With absolutely nothing else to do, my mind filed away the routine times and I would find myself unconsciously having a cigarette when these females set about their everyday regimens.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with many of the individuals who stroll past the house. I started with a friendly hello and advanced to the point where I usually walk down to the garden gate and have a chat.
