We have a no smoking policy in our house, imposed on the majority (me & my dad) by the minority (my mom). This indicates that whenever we want to smoke, we have to stand at the back entrance. From here, you can see the entryway to our neighbour's home and the fronts of two houses across the street. After smoking almost constantly when the depression embeded in, I began to notice the comings and goings of the people in the street. I began to detect when the mums strolled their kids to school when they came back when they headed out shopping, when they took the pet for a walk, and when they sat in the garden. With nothing else to do, my mind filed away the regular times and I would find myself unconsciously having a cigarette when these ladies went about their everyday regimens.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with most of the individuals who walk past the house. I began with a friendly hey there and advanced to the point where I typically walk down to the garden gate and have a chat. Many people would interrupt me now, and say that most ladies at home do what I do, stop and chat with the other ladies. It's a really small street, 8 semi-detached homes and 1 detached (that's 5 structures in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a vacant home, and then beside that is. Next up is Graham's home, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's home, she's a huge Irish female in her 60's. Last on this website is the separated home where Steve and Mandy live with their two teenage boys.

On the right-hand side of the roadway, we begin with Linda's house. Next is our house. Last on the row was a chap who worked somewhere in the City.
