We all go along with this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without providing it a doubt. Here's where I differ from the rest of you. Up up until September, I had been much like you. I joined the ranks of the long-term sick, continued to get my paycheque, and sat and took it easy. The first few weeks were great I. managed to get all the little jobs that accumulate done. In the 3rd week, a malaise began to creep in. I had absolutely nothing to do, no place to go, and loads of time to kill. I started to get depressed.

We have a no cigarette smoking policy in our home, enforced on the bulk (me & my dad) by the minority (my mother). This suggests that whenever we wish to smoke, we need to stand at the back door. From here, you can see the entryway to our neighbour's home and the fronts of two homes across the street. After smoking practically continually when the depression set in, I started to notice the comings and goings of individuals in the street. I started to detect when the mums strolled their kids to school when they came back when they headed out shopping, when they took the canine for a walk, and when they sat in the garden. With absolutely nothing else to do, my mind filed away the regular times and I would find myself subconsciously having a cigarette when these ladies went about their everyday routines.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with most of the individuals who walk past the house. I began with a friendly hello and progressed to the point where I typically stroll down to the garden gate and have a chat. Many individuals would interrupt me now, and say that most ladies at home do what I do, chat and stop with the other ladies. It's a very small street, 8 semi-detached houses and 1 separated (that's 5 buildings in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a uninhabited house, and then beside that is. Next up is Graham's house, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's house, she's a big Irish lady in her 60's. Last on this site is the separated home where Steve and Mandy live with their two teenage boys.

On the right-hand side of the road, we start with Linda's home. Next is our house. Last on the row was a chap who worked someplace in the City.
