We all go along with this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without offering it a second thought. Setting off to work every day, worried more about what I was going to do with the day rather than what my neighbours would be up to. After smoking nearly continually when the anxiety embeded in, I began to observe the comings and goings of individuals in the street. I began to pick up on when the mums walked their kids to school when they came back when they headed out shopping, when they took the canine for a walk, and when they sat in the garden. With absolutely nothing else to do, my mind filed away the regular times and I would find myself subconsciously having a cigarette when these ladies went about their everyday regimens.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with most of the people who stroll past your house. I started with a friendly hello and advanced to the point where I normally walk down to the garden gate and have a chat. Many people would interrupt me now, and say that a lot of females in the house do what I do, talk and stop with the other women. I have two replies. One, I'm male, and two, you don't understand the half of it all. I believe it's time I offered you a complete picture of our street and the people who live on it. It will come in helpful later. It's a really little street, 8 semi-detached homes and 1 separated (that's 5 buildings in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a uninhabited house, and then beside that is. where Jody lives. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is constantly first with any gossip. Next up is Graham's home, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's house, she's a huge Irish woman in her 60's. Then last on this site is the removed home where Steve and Mandy cope with their 2 teenage boys. They are in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the road, we start with Linda's house. Next is our home. Last on the row was a chap who worked someplace in the City.
