With nothing else to do, my mind filed away the routine times and I would discover myself unconsciously having a cigarette when these women set about their daily routines.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with many of the individuals who walk past the house. I began with a friendly hello and progressed to the point where I typically stroll down to the garden gate and have a chat. A lot of people would disrupt me now, and state that most females at home do what I do, stop and chat with the other women. It's a really small street, 8 semi-detached homes and 1 separated (that's 5 buildings in all). She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is always very first with any gossip. Next up is Graham's house, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's home, she's a big Irish lady in her 60's. Then last on this site is the detached home where Steve and Mandy live with their two teenage children. They are in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the roadway, we start with Linda's house. Next is our house. Last on the row was a bloke who worked somewhere in the City.
