We all support this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without providing it a doubt. Here's where I differ from the rest of you. Up till September, I had been just like you. We have a no cigarette smoking policy in our house, implemented on the majority (me & my daddy) by the minority (my mother). This means that whenever we wish to smoke, we have to stand at the back entrance. From here, you can see the entrance to our neighbour's home and the fronts of two houses across the street. After smoking nearly continually when the anxiety set in, I began to discover the comings and goings of individuals in the street. I started to detect when the mums walked their kids to school when they came back when they headed out shopping, when they took the pet for a walk, and when they sat in the garden. With absolutely nothing else to do, my mind filed away the regular times and I would find myself subconsciously having a cigarette when these females went about their everyday regimens.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with many of the individuals who walk past the home. I started with a friendly hey there and advanced to the point where I typically stroll down to the garden gate and have a chat. Many people would interrupt me now, and state that the majority of women at house do what I do, stop and talk with the other females. It's a really little street, 8 semi-detached houses and 1 separated (that's 5 buildings in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a uninhabited house, and then beside that is. where Jody lives. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is constantly first with any gossip. Next up is Graham's house, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's home, she's a big Irish female in her 60's. Then last on this site is the separated house where Steve and Mandy cope with their two teenage boys. They remain in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the road, we start with Linda's home. She recently separated from her partner and is in the procedure of moving. She is in her mid 30's and has two pre-teen daughters Emma and Becky. Next is our home. I have not introduced myself yet, so now would be a good time. I'm John (28 ), and I cope with my mum Chrissie (45) and dad Bob (52 ). Next along are some newbies. At this time in November, I didn't understand their names, so-called them Dick and Helen to myself.
