All of us go along with this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without providing it a second thought. Here's where I differ from the rest of you. Up until September, I had actually been much like you. Setting off to work every day, worried more about what I was going to do with the day instead of what my neighbours would depend on. Then, I developed a problem with my knee. A semi-serious problem. It didn't stop me from doing most things, I might walk, run, and climb, but it did stop me from driving, which in turn stopped me from working. I signed up with the ranks of the long-term ill, continued to receive my paycheque, and sat and took it easy. The very first couple of weeks were fine I. managed to get all the little tasks that pile up done. In the 3rd week, a malaise started to creep in. I had nothing to do, no place to go, and loads of time to eliminate. I started to get depressed.

We have a no smoking cigarettes policy in our house, implemented on the bulk (me & my father) by the minority (my mother). This means that whenever we wish to smoke, we need to stand at the back entrance. From here, you can see the entryway to our neighbour's house and the fronts of 2 homes across the street. After smoking nearly continuously when the anxiety embeded in, I began to observe the comings and goings of the people in the street. I began to detect when the mums strolled their kids to school when they returned when they headed out shopping, when they took the dog for a walk, and when they beinged in the garden. With absolutely nothing else to do, my mind filed away the routine times and I would find myself subconsciously having a cigarette when these women tackled their daily routines.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with the majority of the people who stroll past your house. I started with a friendly hello and advanced to the point where I typically stroll down to the garden gate and have a chat. The majority of people would interrupt me now, and state that a lot of ladies in your home do what I do, stop and talk with the other women. I have 2 replies. One, I'm male, and two, you don't understand the half of everything. I believe it's time I gave you a total picture of our street and the people who live on it. It will come in useful in the future. It's a very little street, 8 semi-detached houses and 1 separated (that's 5 structures in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a vacant house, and then next to that is. where Jody lives. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is always very first with any gossip. Next up is Graham's home, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's house, she's a big Irish female in her 60's. Last on this site is the removed house where Steve and Mandy live with their 2 teenage sons. They remain in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the road, we start with Linda's house. She recently separated from her partner and is in the process of moving. She remains in her mid 30's and has two pre-teen daughters Emma and Becky. Next is our house. I haven't introduced myself yet, so now would be a great time. I'm John (28 ), and I cope with my mum Chrissie (45) and papa Bob (52 ). Next along are some newbies. At this time in November, I didn't understand their names, so-called them Dick and Helen to myself. Naturally, whenever I talked to them, I utilized terms like a neighbour to bridge this gap in my understanding. They were a couple, in their late 30's, early 40's, and they seemed to keep themselves to themselves. Last on the row was a chap who worked someplace in the City. I never ever talked to him, although what I'm about to inform you, so this is the last time I mention him.
