All of us go along with this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without providing it a second thought. Here's where I vary from the rest of you. Up till September, I had been much like you. Then in the third week, a malaise began to creep in. I had absolutely nothing to do, no place to go, and loads of time to kill. I started to get depressed.

We have a no cigarette smoking policy in our house, enforced on the bulk (me & my father) by the minority (my mother). From here, you can see the entryway to our neighbour's house and the fronts of two houses throughout the street. I started to pick up on when the mums walked their kids to school when they came back when they went out shopping, when they took the dog for a walk, and when they sat in the garden.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with the majority of individuals who stroll past your house. I started with a friendly hello and advanced to the point where I normally stroll down to the garden gate and have a chat. Most people would disrupt me now, and say that many women at home do what I do, stop and chat with the other women. I have 2 replies. One, I'm male, and two, you don't know the half of all of it. It's a very little street, 8 semi-detached houses and 1 separated (that's 5 buildings in all). She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is always first with any gossip. Next up is Graham's home, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's house, she's a big Irish woman in her 60's. Then last on this site is the separated house where Steve and Mandy cope with their two teenage kids. They are in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the roadway, we start with Linda's home. Next is our home. Last on the row was a chap who worked somewhere in the City.
