We all go along with this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without providing it a doubt. Here's where I differ from the rest of you. Up till September, I had actually been much like you. I joined the ranks of the long-term ill, continued to receive my paycheque, and sat and took it easy. The first few weeks were fine I. managed to get all the little tasks that accumulate done. Then in the third week, a despair started to creep in. I had nothing to do, nowhere to go, and loads of time to kill. I began to get depressed.

We have a no smoking cigarettes policy in our home, enforced on the majority (me & my dad) by the minority (my mother). This indicates that whenever we want to smoke, we have to stand at the back entrance. From here, you can see the entrance to our neighbour's house and the fronts of two houses across the street. After cigarette smoking practically continually when the depression set in, I started to see the comings and goings of individuals in the street. I began to detect when the mums walked their kids to school when they came back when they went out shopping, when they took the pet for a walk, and when they sat in the garden. With absolutely nothing else to do, my mind filed away the routine times and I would find myself unconsciously having a cigarette when these females set about their daily routines.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with the majority of individuals who stroll past your home. I started with a friendly hi and advanced to the point where I typically stroll down to the garden gate and have a chat. Many people would disrupt me now, and state that the majority of females at home do what I do, stop and chat with the other women. I have two replies. One, I'm male, and 2, you don't know the half of it all. I think it's time I gave you a complete photo of our street and the people who live on it. It will come in useful in the future. It's a really little street, 8 semi-detached homes and 1 removed (that's 5 buildings in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a vacant home, and after that next to that is. Next up is Graham's home, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's house, she's a huge Irish lady in her 60's. Last on this site is the separated home where Steve and Mandy live with their two teenage kids.

On the right-hand side of the roadway, we begin with Linda's house. Next is our house. Last on the row was a bloke who worked someplace in the City.
