We all go along with this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without providing it a second thought. Setting off to work every day, worried more about what I was going to do with the day rather than what my neighbours would be up to. November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with many of the people who walk past the house. It's a very little street, 8 semi-detached homes and 1 detached (that's 5 buildings in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a uninhabited house, and then next to that is. where Jody lives. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is always very first with any chatter. Next up is Graham's house, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's house, she's a huge Irish female in her 60's. Then last on this site is the detached home where Steve and Mandy cope with their 2 teenage sons. They remain in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the roadway, we start with Linda's home. She just recently separated from her husband and is in the process of moving. She is in her mid 30's and has two pre-teen children Emma and Becky. Next is our house. I have not presented myself yet, so now would be a great time. I'm John (28 ), and I deal with my mum Chrissie (45) and dad Bob (52 ). Next along are some newcomers. At this time in November, I didn't understand their names, so-called them Dick and Helen to myself. Of course, whenever I spoke with them, I utilized terms like a neighbour to bridge this gap in my knowledge. They were a couple, in their late 30's, early 40's, and they seemed to keep themselves to themselves. Last on the row was a chap who worked someplace in the City. I never talked to him, although what I'm about to inform you, so this is the last time I mention him.
