We all support this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without providing it a second thought. Here's where I vary from the rest of you. Up up until September, I had been just like you. Setting off to work every day, concerned more about what I was going to do with the day instead of what my neighbours would be up to. I developed a problem with my knee. A semi-serious issue. The first couple of weeks were fine I. managed to get all the little jobs that pile up done. Then in the 3rd week, a despair began to sneak in. I had nothing to do, nowhere to go, and loads of time to kill. I began to get depressed.

We have a no cigarette smoking policy in our home, imposed on the bulk (me & my daddy) by the minority (my mom). This implies that whenever we wish to smoke, we have to stand at the back door. From here, you can see the entrance to our neighbour's house and the fronts of two homes across the street. After cigarette smoking nearly constantly when the anxiety embeded in, I started to see the comings and goings of the people in the street. I started to detect when the mums strolled their kids to school when they came back when they went out shopping, when they took the pet dog for a walk, and when they sat in the garden. With nothing else to do, my mind filed away the routine times and I would discover myself unconsciously having a cigarette when these women tackled their daily routines.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with many of the people who stroll past the house. I began with a friendly hi and progressed to the point where I usually stroll down to the garden gate and have a chat. The majority of individuals would disrupt me now, and say that most women at home do what I do, chat and stop with the other women. It's a really small street, 8 semi-detached houses and 1 removed (that's 5 structures in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a vacant house, and then next to that is. where Jody lives. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is always first with any chatter. Next up is Graham's home, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's home, she's a huge Irish lady in her 60's. Then last on this site is the removed home where Steve and Mandy deal with their two teenage boys. They remain in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the roadway, we start with Linda's home. Next is our house. Last on the row was a bloke who worked someplace in the City.
