From here, you can see the entrance to our neighbour's home and the fronts of two houses across the street. After smoking cigarettes almost continuously when the depression set in, I started to notice the comings and goings of individuals in the street. I started to detect when the mums walked their kids to school when they returned when they went out shopping, when they took the dog for a walk, and when they beinged in the garden. With nothing else to do, my mind filed away the regular times and I would find myself subconsciously having a cigarette when these ladies set about their everyday routines.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with many of the people who walk past the house. I started with a friendly hello and advanced to the point where I normally stroll down to the garden gate and have a chat. Most people would interrupt me now, and state that a lot of ladies at home do what I do, talk and stop with the other ladies.
