We all go along with this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without providing it a second thought. Setting off to work every day, worried more about what I was going to do with the day rather than what my neighbours would be up to. I started to pick up on when the mums walked their kids to school when they returned when they went out shopping, when they took the dog for a walk, and when they sat in the garden. With absolutely nothing else to do, my mind filed away the regular times and I would find myself subconsciously having a cigarette when these ladies went about their daily regimens.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with most of the people who walk past the house. I began with a friendly hi and advanced to the point where I generally stroll down to the garden gate and have a chat. Many people would disrupt me now, and state that many ladies at house do what I do, talk and stop with the other women. It's a really small street, 8 semi-detached homes and 1 separated (that's 5 structures in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a uninhabited house, and then next to that is. where Jody lives. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is constantly first with any chatter. Next up is Graham's home, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's house, she's a big Irish lady in her 60's. Then last on this site is the detached house where Steve and Mandy deal with their two teenage children. They remain in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the road, we begin with Linda's house. She just recently separated from her husband and is in the procedure of moving. She is in her mid 30's and has 2 pre-teen children Emma and Becky. Next is our house. I have not introduced myself yet, so now would be a great time. I'm John (28 ), and I deal with my mum Chrissie (45) and papa Bob (52 ). Next along are some newbies. At this time in November, I didn't know their names, so-called them Dick and Helen to myself. Of course, whenever I talked to them, I utilized terms like a neighbour to bridge this space in my knowledge. They were a couple, in their late 30's, early 40's, and they seemed to keep themselves to themselves. Last on the row was a chap who worked someplace in the City. I never spoke to him, despite the fact that what I'm about to tell you, so this is the last time I mention him.
