In the third week, a despair started to creep in. I had nothing to do, nowhere to go, and loads of time to kill. I began to get depressed.

We have a no smoking policy in our home, enforced on the majority (me & my dad) by the minority (my mother). This suggests that whenever we want to smoke, we have to stand at the back door. From here, you can see the entrance to our neighbour's house and the fronts of 2 houses across the street. After smoking cigarettes nearly constantly when the anxiety embeded in, I began to notice the comings and goings of individuals in the street. I began to pick up on when the mums walked their kids to school when they returned when they headed out shopping, when they took the pet for a walk, and when they sat in the garden. With absolutely nothing else to do, my mind filed away the routine times and I would discover myself unconsciously having a cigarette when these ladies went about their day-to-day routines.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with most of the people who stroll past the house. I began with a friendly hey there and advanced to the point where I usually stroll down to the garden gate and have a chat. Most people would disrupt me now, and state that many women at home do what I do, chat and stop with the other women. I have two replies. One, I'm male, and two, you do not know the half of it all.
