We all go along with this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without giving it a second idea. With absolutely nothing else to do, my mind filed away the routine times and I would find myself unconsciously having a cigarette when these ladies set about their everyday regimens.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with many of the individuals who walk past the house. I began with a friendly hi and progressed to the point where I typically stroll down to the garden gate and have a chat. A lot of individuals would interrupt me now, and state that the majority of women at home do what I do, talk and stop with the other women. It's a very small street, 8 semi-detached homes and 1 separated (that's 5 buildings in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a vacant home, and then next to that is. where Jody lives. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is always very first with any chatter. Next up is Graham's house, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's house, she's a big Irish lady in her 60's. Last on this site is the separated home where Steve and Mandy live with their two teenage children. They are in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the roadway, we begin with Linda's house. Next is our house. Last on the row was a bloke who worked someplace in the City.
