We all go along with this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without offering it a second thought. Setting off to work every day, worried more about what I was going to do with the day rather than what my neighbours would be up to. After cigarette smoking practically continuously when the depression set in, I began to discover the comings and goings of the people in the street. I started to pick up on when the mums strolled their kids to school when they came back when they headed out shopping, when they took the pet for a walk, and when they sat in the garden. With absolutely nothing else to do, my mind filed away the regular times and I would discover myself unconsciously having a cigarette when these women set about their day-to-day routines.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with many of the people who stroll past the home. I began with a friendly hello and progressed to the point where I normally stroll down to the garden gate and have a chat. The majority of individuals would disrupt me now, and state that most ladies at house do what I do, stop and talk with the other women. It's a very little street, 8 semi-detached homes and 1 detached (that's 5 structures in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a uninhabited house, and then beside that is. Next up is Graham's house, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's home, she's a big Irish woman in her 60's. Last on this site is the separated home where Steve and Mandy live with their two teenage children.

On the right-hand side of the road, we start with Linda's home. She just recently separated from her husband and is in the process of moving. She is in her mid 30's and has two pre-teen children Emma and Becky. Next is our home. I have not introduced myself yet, so now would be a good time. I'm John (28 ), and I deal with my mum Chrissie (45) and father Bob (52 ). Next along are some beginners. At this time in November, I didn't know their names, so-called them Dick and Helen to myself. Of course, whenever I spoke with them, I used terms like a neighbour to bridge this gap in my understanding. They were a couple, in their late 30's, early 40's, and they seemed to keep themselves to themselves. Last on the row was a chap who worked someplace in the City. I never spoke with him, although what I'm about to inform you, so this is the last time I mention him.
