We all go along with this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without providing it a second idea. Setting off to work every day, concerned more about what I was going to do with the day rather than what my neighbours would be up to. After smoking nearly constantly when the depression set in, I started to see the comings and goings of the people in the street. I began to detect when the mums strolled their kids to school when they returned when they went out shopping, when they took the pet for a walk, and when they sat in the garden. With nothing else to do, my mind filed away the routine times and I would find myself unconsciously having a cigarette when these ladies tackled their everyday routines.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with most of the individuals who walk past the house. I started with a friendly hello and advanced to the point where I generally stroll down to the garden gate and have a chat. A lot of people would interrupt me now, and say that most women at home do what I do, stop and talk with the other ladies. It's a very small street, 8 semi-detached homes and 1 separated (that's 5 structures in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a vacant home, and then next to that is. where Jody lives. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is always first with any chatter. Next up is Graham's house, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's home, she's a huge Irish lady in her 60's. Last on this site is the detached house where Steve and Mandy live with their 2 teenage kids. They remain in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the roadway, we start with Linda's house. She recently separated from her hubby and is in the procedure of moving. She is in her mid 30's and has 2 pre-teen children Emma and Becky. Next is our house. I haven't presented myself yet, so now would be a great time. I'm John (28 ), and I deal with my mum Chrissie (45) and papa Bob (52 ). Next along are some newcomers. At this time in November, I didn't understand their names, so-called them Dick and Helen to myself. I never talked to him, although what I'm about to inform you, so this is the last time I mention him.
