Then in the 3rd week, a malaise began to creep in. I had nothing to do, no place to go, and loads of time to kill. I started to get depressed.

We have a no smoking cigarettes policy in our home, imposed on the bulk (me & my dad) by the minority (my mother). This suggests that whenever we wish to smoke, we have to stand at the back entrance. From here, you can see the entryway to our neighbour's home and the fronts of 2 homes across the street. After smoking cigarettes nearly constantly when the depression set in, I started to observe the comings and goings of individuals in the street. I started to pick up on when the mums walked their kids to school when they came back when they headed out shopping, when they took the pet dog for a walk, and when they sat in the garden. With absolutely nothing else to do, my mind filed away the regular times and I would find myself subconsciously having a cigarette when these ladies tackled their everyday regimens.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with many of the people who stroll past the house. I began with a friendly hi and advanced to the point where I typically walk down to the garden gate and have a chat. Most people would disrupt me now, and state that many females at home do what I do, talk and stop with the other women. It's a very little street, 8 semi-detached homes and 1 separated (that's 5 buildings in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a uninhabited house, and then next to that is. Next up is Graham's home, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's home, she's a big Irish woman in her 60's. Last on this site is the detached home where Steve and Mandy live with their 2 teenage kids.

On the right-hand side of the roadway, we start with Linda's house. She just recently separated from her other half and remains in the procedure of moving. She remains in her mid 30's and has 2 pre-teen daughters Emma and Becky. Next is our home. I have not presented myself yet, so now would be a great time. I'm John (28 ), and I cope with my mum Chrissie (45) and daddy Bob (52 ). Next along are some newbies. They were a couple, in their late 30's, early 40's, and they seemed to keep themselves to themselves. Last on the row was a bloke who worked someplace in the City. I never ever spoke with him, despite the fact that what I'm about to tell you, so this is the last time I mention him.
