We all go along with this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without giving it a 2nd thought. Setting off to work every day, worried more about what I was going to do with the day rather than what my neighbours would be up to. It didn't stop me from doing most things, I could stroll, run, and climb, however it did stop me from driving, and that in turn stopped me from working.

We have a no cigarette smoking policy in our house, implemented on the majority (me & my daddy) by the minority (my mother). This means that whenever we wish to smoke, we have to stand at the back door. From here, you can see the entrance to our neighbour's house and the fronts of 2 houses across the street. After cigarette smoking nearly continually when the depression embeded in, I started to observe the comings and goings of individuals in the street. I started to detect when the mums walked their kids to school when they came back when they headed out shopping, when they took the pet for a walk, and when they beinged in the garden. With nothing else to do, my mind filed away the regular times and I would discover myself unconsciously having a cigarette when these females tackled their everyday routines.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with the majority of the people who walk past the house. I started with a friendly hey there and advanced to the point where I normally stroll down to the garden gate and have a chat. Many people would disrupt me now, and say that most ladies at home do what I do, talk and stop with the other women. I have two replies. One, I'm male, and 2, you do not know the half of it all. I believe it's time I gave you a total photo of our street and the people who survive on it. It will can be found in useful later. It's a really little street, 8 semi-detached houses and 1 detached (that's 5 structures in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a uninhabited house, and after that next to that is. Next up is Graham's house, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's house, she's a big Irish woman in her 60's. Last on this site is the separated house where Steve and Mandy live with their 2 teenage children.

On the right-hand side of the roadway, we start with Linda's home. Next is our home. Last on the row was a bloke who worked somewhere in the City.
