We all support this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without offering it a doubt. Here's where I differ from the rest of you. Up till September, I had been similar to you. Setting off to work every day, concerned more about what I was going to make with the day instead of what my neighbours would be up to. Then, I established a problem with my knee. A semi-serious problem. It didn't stop me from doing most things, I might walk, run, and climb, but it did stop me from driving, which in turn stopped me from working. I joined the ranks of the long-term ill, continued to receive my paycheque, and sat and took it simple. The very first couple of weeks were fine I. managed to get all the little jobs that accumulate done. Then in the 3rd week, a malaise started to sneak in. I had nothing to do, no place to go, and loads of time to kill. I started to get depressed.

We have a no smoking policy in our house, imposed on the majority (me & my dad) by the minority (my mother). From here, you can see the entrance to our neighbour's house and the fronts of two houses across the street. I began to pick up on when the mums walked their kids to school when they came back when they went out shopping, when they took the pet dog for a walk, and when they sat in the garden.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with most of the individuals who walk past the house. I began with a friendly hello and progressed to the point where I generally stroll down to the garden gate and have a chat. Most people would disrupt me now, and say that many females at house do what I do, talk and stop with the other women. It's a very little street, 8 semi-detached homes and 1 detached (that's 5 buildings in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a uninhabited house, and then next to that is. Next up is Graham's home, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's home, she's a big Irish lady in her 60's. Last on this site is the separated home where Steve and Mandy live with their two teenage boys.

On the right-hand side of the road, we begin with Linda's home. She just recently separated from her partner and is in the process of moving. She is in her mid 30's and has 2 pre-teen children Emma and Becky. Next is our home. I haven't introduced myself yet, so now would be a great time. I'm John (28 ), and I cope with my mum Chrissie (45) and papa Bob (52 ). Next along are some newcomers. At this time in November, I didn't understand their names, so-called them Dick and Helen to myself. Obviously, whenever I talked to them, I utilized terms like a neighbour to bridge this gap in my knowledge. They were a couple, in their late 30's, early 40's, and they seemed to keep themselves to themselves. Last on the row was a chap who worked somewhere in the City. I never talked to him, even though what I'm about to tell you, so this is the last time I discuss him.
