We all support this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without providing it a doubt. Here's where I differ from the rest of you. Up till September, I had actually been just like you. Setting off to work every day, concerned more about what I was going to finish with the day rather than what my neighbours would depend on. Then, I developed a problem with my knee. A semi-serious problem. It didn't stop me from doing most things, I might stroll, run, and climb, but it did stop me from driving, which in turn stopped me from working. I joined the ranks of the long-lasting sick, continued to get my paycheque, and sat and took it simple. The very first few weeks were fine I. managed to get all the little jobs that pile up done. In the 3rd week, a malaise began to creep in. I had absolutely nothing to do, no place to go, and loads of time to kill. I began to get depressed.

We have a no cigarette smoking policy in our house, imposed on the majority (me & my daddy) by the minority (my mother). This suggests that whenever we wish to smoke, we need to stand at the back entrance. From here, you can see the entryway to our neighbour's house and the fronts of two houses across the street. After cigarette smoking nearly continuously when the depression set in, I started to observe the comings and goings of the people in the street. I began to detect when the mums strolled their kids to school when they returned when they headed out shopping, when they took the canine for a walk, and when they sat in the garden. With absolutely nothing else to do, my mind filed away the routine times and I would find myself subconsciously having a cigarette when these ladies went about their day-to-day routines.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with the majority of individuals who stroll past your house. I started with a friendly hey there and advanced to the point where I generally walk down to the garden gate and have a chat. Most people would interrupt me now, and say that most females at home do what I do, stop and chat with the other women. I have 2 replies. One, I'm male, and 2, you don't understand the half of all of it. I believe it's time I offered you a total photo of our street and individuals who survive on it. It will come in useful later. It's a very small street, 8 semi-detached homes and 1 detached (that's 5 structures in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a vacant house, and after that next to that is. where Jody lives. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is constantly first with any gossip. Next up is Graham's house, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's home, she's a huge Irish lady in her 60's. Last on this site is the separated house where Steve and Mandy live with their two teenage sons. They are in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the roadway, we begin with Linda's home. Next is our home. Last on the row was a chap who worked someplace in the City.
