We have a no smoking cigarettes policy in our home, enforced on the bulk (me & my dad) by the minority (my mom). This means that whenever we want to smoke, we have to stand at the back entrance. From here, you can see the entrance to our neighbour's house and the fronts of two homes across the street. After cigarette smoking almost constantly when the anxiety set in, I started to discover the comings and goings of the people in the street. I began to pick up on when the mums strolled their kids to school when they came back when they went out shopping, when they took the pet dog for a walk, and when they beinged in the garden. With nothing else to do, my mind filed away the regular times and I would discover myself unconsciously having a cigarette when these females went about their day-to-day routines.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with most of the people who walk past the house. I started with a friendly hi and advanced to the point where I normally walk down to the garden gate and have a chat. Many people would interrupt me now, and say that most females at house do what I do, talk and stop with the other females. It's a very small street, 8 semi-detached houses and 1 separated (that's 5 structures in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a uninhabited home, and then beside that is. where Jody lives. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is always very first with any gossip. Next up is Graham's house, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's home, she's a huge Irish lady in her 60's. Then last on this site is the separated house where Steve and Mandy deal with their 2 teenage kids. They are in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the road, we begin with Linda's home. She recently separated from her other half and is in the process of moving. She is in her mid 30's and has 2 pre-teen daughters Emma and Becky. Next is our house. I haven't presented myself yet, so now would be a great time. I'm John (28 ), and I deal with my mum Chrissie (45) and papa Bob (52 ). Next along are some beginners. At this time in November, I didn't know their names, so-called them Dick and Helen to myself. Of course, whenever I talked to them, I utilized terms like a neighbour to bridge this gap in my knowledge. They were a couple, in their late 30's, early 40's, and they seemed to keep themselves to themselves. Last on the row was a bloke who worked somewhere in the City. I never spoke with him, although what I'm about to tell you, so this is the last time I mention him.
