From here, you can see the entrance to our neighbour's house and the fronts of two houses across the street. After smoking cigarettes almost constantly when the depression embeded in, I began to see the comings and goings of individuals in the street. I started to detect when the mums strolled their kids to school when they came back when they went out shopping, when they took the pet for a walk, and when they beinged in the garden. With absolutely nothing else to do, my mind filed away the regular times and I would discover myself unconsciously having a cigarette when these females tackled their everyday regimens.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with most of the people who stroll past the house. I began with a friendly hi and progressed to the point where I generally stroll down to the garden gate and have a chat. A lot of individuals would interrupt me now, and say that most ladies at house do what I do, stop and chat with the other women. It's a very small street, 8 semi-detached homes and 1 separated (that's 5 buildings in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a vacant house, and then beside that is. where Jody lives. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is always first with any chatter. Next up is Graham's home, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's home, she's a big Irish woman in her 60's. Then last on this site is the detached house where Steve and Mandy deal with their 2 teenage sons. They are in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the roadway, we start with Linda's house. Next is our house. Last on the row was a bloke who worked someplace in the City.
