All of us go along with this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without giving it a doubt. Here's where I vary from the rest of you. Up till September, I had been similar to you. Then in the 3rd week, a malaise started to sneak in. I had absolutely nothing to do, nowhere to go, and loads of time to eliminate. I started to get depressed.

We have a no cigarette smoking policy in our home, imposed on the majority (me & my daddy) by the minority (my mother). This means that whenever we want to smoke, we have to stand at the back entrance. From here, you can see the entryway to our neighbour's house and the fronts of two homes across the street. After smoking practically continuously when the depression embeded in, I began to observe the comings and goings of individuals in the street. I began to pick up on when the mums walked their kids to school when they came back when they headed out shopping, when they took the canine for a walk, and when they sat in the garden. With absolutely nothing else to do, my mind filed away the regular times and I would find myself unconsciously having a cigarette when these women went about their daily regimens.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with most of individuals who walk past the house. I began with a friendly hi and progressed to the point where I generally stroll down to the garden gate and have a chat. Most people would interrupt me now, and state that a lot of ladies at home do what I do, stop and chat with the other women. I have 2 replies. It's a really little street, 8 semi-detached homes and 1 removed (that's 5 buildings in all). She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is always very first with any chatter. Next up is Graham's house, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's house, she's a big Irish lady in her 60's. Then last on this website is the separated home where Steve and Mandy deal with their 2 teenage sons. They remain in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the road, we start with Linda's house. Next is our home. Last on the row was a bloke who worked somewhere in the City.
