Then in the third week, a despair began to sneak in. I had nothing to do, no place to go, and loads of time to kill. I started to get depressed.

We have a no smoking cigarettes policy in our house, imposed on the bulk (me & my daddy) by the minority (my mother). This means that whenever we wish to smoke, we have to stand at the back entrance. From here, you can see the entrance to our neighbour's home and the fronts of 2 houses across the street. After smoking cigarettes nearly continually when the depression set in, I began to notice the comings and goings of the people in the street. I began to pick up on when the mums walked their kids to school when they came back when they went out shopping, when they took the pet dog for a walk, and when they beinged in the garden. With nothing else to do, my mind filed away the regular times and I would find myself subconsciously having a cigarette when these females set about their daily regimens.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with the majority of individuals who walk past your home. I began with a friendly hello and progressed to the point where I generally stroll down to the garden gate and have a chat. The majority of people would interrupt me now, and state that most females in the house do what I do, stop and talk with the other women. I have 2 replies. One, I'm male, and two, you don't understand the half of everything. I believe it's time I provided you a total photo of our street and individuals who survive on it. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is always first with any gossip. Next up is Graham's house, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's home, she's a huge Irish female in her 60's. Last on this site is the separated home where Steve and Mandy live with their two teenage children. They remain in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the roadway, we start with Linda's home. Next is our home. Last on the row was a chap who worked someplace in the City.
