We all go along with this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without offering it a second idea. With absolutely nothing else to do, my mind filed away the regular times and I would find myself unconsciously having a cigarette when these ladies went about their daily regimens.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with many of the people who stroll past the house. I started with a friendly hey there and advanced to the point where I normally walk down to the garden gate and have a chat. Many people would interrupt me now, and state that the majority of ladies at home do what I do, chat and stop with the other ladies. It's a really little street, 8 semi-detached houses and 1 removed (that's 5 buildings in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a vacant house, and after that next to that is. where Jody lives. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is always first with any chatter. Next up is Graham's home, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's house, she's a big Irish woman in her 60's. Then last on this site is the removed house where Steve and Mandy deal with their two teenage kids. They remain in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the roadway, we start with Linda's home. She just recently separated from her partner and is in the process of moving. She remains in her mid 30's and has two pre-teen children Emma and Becky. Next is our home. I have not introduced myself yet, so now would be a good time. I'm John (28 ), and I cope with my mum Chrissie (45) and papa Bob (52 ). Next along are some newcomers. At this time in November, I didn't know their names, so-called them Dick and Helen to myself. Naturally, whenever I spoke with them, I used terms like a neighbour to bridge this gap in my understanding. They were a couple, in their late 30's, early 40's, and they appeared to keep themselves to themselves. Last on the row was a chap who worked someplace in the City. I never spoke with him, despite the fact that what I'm about to tell you, so this is the last time I mention him.
