We all go along with this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without providing it a 2nd thought. Setting off to work every day, worried more about what I was going to do with the day rather than what my neighbours would be up to. After smoking nearly constantly when the depression set in, I began to observe the comings and goings of individuals in the street. I began to detect when the mums strolled their kids to school when they returned when they headed out shopping, when they took the dog for a walk, and when they sat in the garden. With nothing else to do, my mind filed away the regular times and I would find myself subconsciously having a cigarette when these ladies tackled their day-to-day regimens.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with the majority of individuals who walk past your house. I began with a friendly hi and advanced to the point where I typically walk down to the garden gate and have a chat. Most people would disrupt me now, and say that most ladies at home do what I do, stop and chat with the other women. I have two replies. One, I'm male, and 2, you do not know the half of all of it. I think it's time I offered you a complete photo of our street and individuals who live on it. It will come in useful in the future. It's a very small street, 8 semi-detached houses and 1 removed (that's 5 structures in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a uninhabited home, and then beside that is. where Jody lives. She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is always very first with any gossip. Next up is Graham's house, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's house, she's a huge Irish woman in her 60's. Then last on this site is the separated house where Steve and Mandy live with their 2 teenage sons. They remain in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the road, we start with Linda's home. Next is our home. Last on the row was a chap who worked someplace in the City.
