We all go along with this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without offering it a doubt. Here's where I differ from the rest of you. Up until September, I had actually been just like you. Setting off to work every day, worried more about what I was going to make with the day rather than what my neighbours would depend on. Then, I developed a issue with my knee. A semi-serious problem. It didn't stop me from doing most things, I might walk, run, and climb, however it did stop me from driving, and that in turn stopped me from working. I signed up with the ranks of the long-term ill, continued to get my paycheque, and sat and took it easy. The very first few weeks were great I. managed to get all the little tasks that accumulate done. In the 3rd week, a malaise began to creep in. I had absolutely nothing to do, nowhere to go, and loads of time to eliminate. I began to get depressed.

We have a no cigarette smoking policy in our house, imposed on the majority (me & my dad) by the minority (my mother). This means that whenever we want to smoke, we have to stand at the back door. From here, you can see the entrance to our neighbour's house and the fronts of two houses across the street. After cigarette smoking almost continuously when the depression set in, I began to discover the comings and goings of the people in the street. I started to pick up on when the mums strolled their kids to school when they returned when they headed out shopping, when they took the pet dog for a walk, and when they beinged in the garden. With absolutely nothing else to do, my mind filed away the regular times and I would find myself subconsciously having a cigarette when these ladies set about their day-to-day routines.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with most of the people who stroll past the house. I started with a friendly hi and progressed to the point where I generally stroll down to the garden gate and have a chat. Many people would interrupt me now, and say that many women in your home do what I do, talk and stop with the other women. I have two replies. One, I'm male, and 2, you do not understand the half of it all. I think it's time I offered you a total picture of our street and individuals who reside on it. It will come in useful in the future. It's a really small street, 8 semi-detached homes and 1 detached (that's 5 structures in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a uninhabited home, and after that next to that is. Next up is Graham's house, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's house, she's a huge Irish female in her 60's. Last on this website is the detached house where Steve and Mandy live with their two teenage sons.

On the right-hand side of the road, we start with Linda's home. Next is our home. Last on the row was a chap who worked somewhere in the City.
