All of us go along with this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without offering it a doubt. Here's where I differ from the rest of you. Up up until September, I had been much like you. I had absolutely nothing to do, nowhere to go, and loads of time to eliminate. I began to get depressed.

We have a no smoking policy in our home, imposed on the bulk (me & my dad) by the minority (my mom). This implies that whenever we wish to smoke, we have to stand at the back door. From here, you can see the entryway to our neighbour's house and the fronts of two houses across the street. After smoking practically continually when the anxiety set in, I began to observe the comings and goings of the people in the street. I started to pick up on when the mums strolled their kids to school when they came back when they headed out shopping, when they took the pet dog for a walk, and when they sat in the garden. With absolutely nothing else to do, my mind filed away the regular times and I would find myself unconsciously having a cigarette when these ladies tackled their daily routines.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with most of individuals who walk past the house. I started with a friendly hello and progressed to the point where I generally walk down to the garden gate and have a chat. On the right-hand side of the roadway, we start with Linda's house. Next is our home. Last on the row was a chap who worked someplace in the City.
