With absolutely nothing else to do, my mind filed away the regular times and I would find myself unconsciously having a cigarette when these ladies went about their everyday regimens.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with most of the people who walk past the house. I started with a friendly hello and advanced to the point where I generally walk down to the garden gate and have a chat. Most people would interrupt me now, and say that the majority of ladies at home do what I do, stop and talk with the other women. I have two replies. It's a extremely small street, 8 semi-detached homes and 1 detached (that's 5 buildings in all). She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is constantly first with any chatter. Next up is Graham's house, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's house, she's a huge Irish lady in her 60's. Then last on this site is the separated home where Steve and Mandy live with their 2 teenage children. They remain in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the roadway, we begin with Linda's house. Next is our home. Last on the row was a bloke who worked someplace in the City.
