After cigarette smoking nearly continuously when the depression embeded in, I began to discover the comings and goings of the people in the street. I began to detect when the mums walked their kids to school when they returned when they headed out shopping, when they took the pet dog for a walk, and when they beinged in the garden. With absolutely nothing else to do, my mind filed away the routine times and I would discover myself unconsciously having a cigarette when these ladies tackled their daily routines.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with most of the individuals who stroll past the house. I began with a friendly hi and progressed to the point where I generally stroll down to the garden gate and have a chat. Many people would interrupt me now, and state that the majority of women at house do what I do, chat and stop with the other women. It's a really little street, 8 semi-detached houses and 1 removed (that's 5 buildings in all). She's a 70 odd-year-old widower, who is always very first with any chatter. Next up is Graham's house, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's house, she's a big Irish woman in her 60's. Then last on this website is the removed house where Steve and Mandy cope with their 2 teenage sons. They are in their late 30's.

On the right-hand side of the road, we start with Linda's house. Next is our house. Last on the row was a chap who worked someplace in the City.
