We all go along with this, moving through the days, weeks, and years without giving it a second idea. Setting off to work every day, worried more about what I was going to do with the day rather than what my neighbours would be up to. After smoking practically continuously when the depression embeded in, I started to discover the comings and goings of the people in the street. I began to pick up on when the mums strolled their kids to school when they returned when they headed out shopping, when they took the canine for a walk, and when they sat in the garden. With absolutely nothing else to do, my mind filed away the routine times and I would find myself unconsciously having a cigarette when these females set about their day-to-day routines.

November, and by now I'm on speaking terms with most of the people who walk past your house. I started with a friendly hi and advanced to the point where I normally stroll down to the garden gate and have a chat. The majority of people would disrupt me now, and state that many women at home do what I do, stop and talk with the other women. I have 2 replies. It's a very small street, 8 semi-detached houses and 1 detached (that's 5 buildings in all). Down the left side (as you stand at the top of the street) there is a uninhabited home, and then next to that is. Next up is Graham's home, he's in his 50's. Next is Sheila's house, she's a huge Irish woman in her 60's. Last on this site is the separated home where Steve and Mandy live with their 2 teenage boys.

On the right-hand side of the road, we start with Linda's home. Next is our house. Last on the row was a bloke who worked someplace in the City.
